Bar-Ilan: Conference Delegates Say Divestiture Promotes Terror

Vigilance is crucial to fighting academic boycotts against Israel; such was the message delivered Wednesday by the British Ambassador to Israel, Simon McDonald, at the opening of the Bar-Ilan University conference on academic freedom. Also, Harvard Law School Prof. Alan Dershowitz, who gave the keynote speech at the conference, argued against the rhetoric of last year's academic boycott attempt and other boycotts against Israel. Brandeis Stands Behind Scholar Accused of Ties to Terror

Khalil Shikaki, a Palestinian academic affiliated with Brandeis University, dismissed allegations that he's linked to Islamic Jihad, and says he's not worried about attempts to persuade Jewish groups to cut him off. Georgetown: Critics Step Up Protests, but PSM Still Coming to Campus

Georgetown's decision last month to permit the Palestine Solidarity Movement to hold its fifth annual conference on campus in February has been criticized by critics who charge that the group is tied to anti-Israeli and terrorist groups. Loyola University Chicago Hillel Brings Israeli Exhibit to Campus

Wash U in St. Louis: Chancellor Wrighton Tours Israel

Chancellor Wrighton, accompanied by Dean Edward Macias and other University colleagues, recently traveled to Israel. While there, they explored potential opportunities for further educational collaborations between Washington University and Israel. The University already has close ties with Israel - it has its largest study abroad program for undergraduates at Hebrew University and has a small collaborative partnership in social work there as well. CFJS Sends Canadian Delegation to World Student Congress

The Canadian Federation of Jewish Students (CFJS) sent five delegates to the annual World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) congress, held recently in Zichron Yaakov, Israel. The students – Gary Diamond from the University of Western Ontario, Emily Sufrin from the University of British Columbia, Samuel Zeev Konig from McGill University, Hagai Kuperman from the University of Toronto and myself, from Ryerson University – spent five days networking, learning and socializing with other Jewish students from across the world. Dean College: Brava Comes Home

Joseph Brava, 19, traveled about 5,700 miles to Israel and felt like he had come home.  Brava, a freshman studying psychology at Dean College in Franklin,  took a 10-day trip through Israel with Taglit-birthright Israel. Brava said he would recommend the trip to anyone. He is planning to return to the country next summer.(Metrowest)


Ithaca: Program Connects Jewish Students to Israeli Roots

Because she didn’t feel connected to her Jewish heritage, senior Lisa Erhartic decided to visit Israel during winter break. Erhartic went to Israel with 15 other Ithaca College students through Taglit-Birthright Israel for 10 days. Senior Alexandra Lerman related, "I talked to Jewish students from France, Uruguay, South Africa and Australia, and in my head I was thinking that I will never in my life experience something like this again.”  (Ithacan)


Marquette: Learning the Ropes

Marquette freshman Jason Rae had more to look forward to winter break this year than the wonders of being a couch potato. In January Rae embarked on the Anti-Defamation League's Current and Future Leaders Study Mission to Israel. The study mission was a week-long conference during which students travel to Israel for an up-close look at the issues surrounding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. (Marquette Tribune)


Toronto: Journal Gives Young Jews and Arabs a Voice

Meena Rafie (pictured right), an Afghani-born Muslim, and Ran Goel (left), an Israeli-born Jew, believe it’s possible.“We like to think of it as a non-ideological, apolitical journal,” said Rafie, a fourth-year political science and urban studies major at the University of Toronto and the executive producer of Yalla, a student-run literary journal about the Middle East conflict. Academic Anti-Semitism Conference

Academics, human rights lawyers and anti-racism experts will meet in Amsterdam next month for the first ever international conference on academic anti-Semitism.
