Give Hamas Nothing for Free by Dennis Ross
The Palestinians have now voted to remake the Palestinian Authority by electing Hamas, a group that rejects the very concept of peace with the Israelis - or even a negotiated divorce from the Israelis, which is what disengagement is really all about. Hamas will want to have it both ways: having relations with the greater world while preserving its fundamental doctrine of rejection of Israel and support for violence. Hamas must recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, reject violence and be obliged to stop all acts of terrorism. (Washington Post)
Us and Them by Alex Fishman
The cracks between extremist elements amongst the settlers and their supporters and the overall Jewish public inside the Green Line appeared long ago. After disengagement the cracks became gaps and swept away more moderate elements. (Ynet News) See also Tragic Day for Israel (Ynet News)
How Not to Help Hamas - Editorial
Palestinians receive more international aid, per capita, than any people in the world. The upset victory by Hamas in the Palestinian elections offers a rare opportunity for the U.S. and the international community to rethink under what conditions humanitarian aid could be provided to Palestinians without the risk that it would be siphoned to Hamas. President Bush is right to threaten to cut off U.S. aid to a Palestinian government controlled by Hamas. U.S. law and common decency preclude taxpayer money from going to a terrorist group that has vowed to annihilate Israel. (Los Angeles Times)

The Price of Ignoring Palestinians' Needs by Natan Sharansky
Hamas's victory in the Palestinian elections is the logical outcome of a "peace process" more than a decade long that completely ignored what was happening within Palestinian society. Rather than seriously link the peace process to the building of a free society among the Palestinians, the democratic world, including Israel, turned a blind eye as Palestinian civil society was hollowed out, its streets taken over by armed thugs and its youth indoctrinated to glorify suicide bombers and despise Israel and America, Jews and Christians. (International Herald Tribune)
Palestine Without Illusions by Charles Krauthammer
After 60 years, the Palestinian people continue to reject the right of a Jewish state to exist side-by-side with them. The world must advise the Palestinian people that if their national will is to embrace Hamas - its methods and its madness - then their national will is simply too murderous and, yes, too depraved for the world to countenance, let alone subsidize. Is Israel Headed for NATO? by Uzi Arad
It would appear that recently, more favorable winds have been blowing in Europe.
Moreover, the strategic understandings between the U.S. and Israel, which were
formulated between then-Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Clinton and
subsequently ratified by their successors, including President Bush’s letter of
commitments from April 2004, successfully anchor Israel’s right to defend itself
on its own. Therefore, the collective defense of NATO will serve as another tier in
regional stability. (Ynet News)
