Satirists Help Israelis Blow Off Steam

Satirists are pouring their energies into the war effort, helping Israelis blow off steam by poking fun at their politicians and generals, and of course at Hizballah chief Hassan Nasrallah. But although Israel prides itself on laughing at absolutely anything, some critics are charging that Israeli satirists are making do with cheap shots at easy targets and are pulling their punches on the real issues of the day. Depeche Mode Scraps Israel Show

Synth-rock band Depeche Mode cancelled a concert scheduled last week in Tel Aviv due to the current crisis in the Middle East, according to the band's Web site. The show at Hayarkon Park was slated to be the final date on the band's world tour and will not be rescheduled.  (Reuters)


Israeli Dance Chooses Life

"It looked really interesting," New Yorker Celine Alwyn said. "I was curious about how what they put on paper is going to result on the stage." It was an audience sentiment that was often repeated about Israeli dance during the Lincoln Center Festival, which was held from July 10-30. This year, the renowned festival, which features a wide array of dance, theater, music and opera from around the world, featured, for the first time, performances by three Israeli dance troupes - one for each week of the festival.
