The Year of the Rocket
by Aluf Benn

The year 2006 deserves to be called "the year of the rocket." It was a year in which the firing of rockets into Israeli territory, from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, dictated Israeli foreign and security policy more than any other factor. The Katyushas fired by Hizbullah and the Qassams fired by the Palestinians had a greater influence than the change of leadership in Jerusalem and the strengthening of Iran. (Ha'aretz)

An Israeli View of Jimmy Carter's Book
by Michael B. Oren

Mr. Carter indeed seems to have a religious problem with the Jewish state. His book bewails the fact that Israel is not the reincarnation of ancient Judea but a modern, largely temporal democracy. In revealing his unease with the idea of Jewish statehood, Mr. Carter sets himself apart from many U.S. presidents before and after him, as well as from nearly 400 years of American Christian thought. Generations of Christians in the U.S., representing a variety of dominations, laymen and clergy alike, have embraced the concept of renewed Jewish sovereignty in Palestine. (Wall Street Journal)

Arabs vs Israel - The View from Pakistan
by Farrukh Saleem

Israel spends $110 on scientific research per year per person while the same figure for the Arab world is $2. Knowledge makes Israel grow by 5.2 per cent a year while "rates of productivity (the average production of one worker) in Arab countries were negative to a large and increasing extent in oil-producing countries during the 1980s and 90s (World Bank; Arab Development Report)." Facts cannot be denied: The state of Israel now has six universities ranked as among the best on the face of the planet. Hebrew University Jerusalem is in the top-100. Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv University and Weizmann Institute of Science are in the top-200. Bar Ilan University and Ben Gurion University are in the top-300. U.S. Reaps Mutual Benefit of Aid to Israel
by Mark Wagman

The U.S. and Israel cooperate extensively on defense, intelligence and economic matters. By doing so, they advance their common interests of promoting freedom, fighting extremism, and seeking peace and prosperity. Economic cooperation between the U.S. and Israel has increased over the years and now brings important mutual benefits. In 2005 there was $26 billion in trade between the two countries. The U.S. and many states have cooperative agreements with Israel to promote joint research, industrial partnerships and free trade. Microsoft, Cisco, Intel and Motorola have located major facilities in Israel. (Israel21c)

The Iranian Who Wants an Apocalypse
by Michael Burleigh

Ahmadinejad is unique, not because of his pronouncements about Israel, which he wishes wiped off the face of the earth, but because he actively seeks to bring about an apocalyptic struggle between the righteous and the wicked to accelerate the return of the mahdi or Hidden Imam. (Telegraph-UK)

From the Theme to the Facts, How Did He Get It So Wrong?
by Silvan Shalom

Dear President Carter: I am sure that you are not an anti-Semite. But why did you choose to write a book filled with inaccuracies and distortions that gives so much ammunition to extremists seeking to undermine peace in the Middle East? For decades, Israel has been yearning for peace but has not had a willing negotiating partner. The writer is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Israel. (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Are Jews Suppressing Speech?
by Edward I. Koch and Rafael Medoff

From Tehran to Plains, Ga., to the hallowed halls of Harvard, a new cry is heard in the land: The Jews are suppressing free speech. In recent weeks, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, and Harvard University-associated academics John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt have all claimed to be victims of a conspiracy by Jews to keep them from speaking out. The notion that Carter has been cowed into silent acquiescence to "the right wing in Israel" would be laughable were it not so pernicious. (New Jersey Jewish Standard)

Anti-Zionists and the Impossible Peace
by David Matas

The never-ending anti-Zionist attacks on Israel have produced more than their fair share of deluded hope. The only real path to peace between Israel and its neighbors is a two-state solution, acceptance of the existence of Israel and creation of a separate Palestinian state beside Israel. But it is a solution that anti-Zionists constantly spurn. They want the destruction of Israel and its absorption into a larger Arab Muslim state, what is euphemistically called the one-state solution. (Globe and Mail-Canada)
